About the system of Buddhist education

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, a new time came for Buddhists — a time of the revival of culture, customs, and spiritual values. In 1988, the first community of Buddhists was registered in Elista, and in the same year the first prayer house was opened. Having collected the necessary funds, the Buddhist community of Elista acquired a building for the prayer house (at 83 Lermontov Street), where services were held and individual receptions of the city's residents were also conducted. A powerful impetus for the development of Buddhism came from the visits of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama in the summer of 1991 (for the first time) and in the autumn of 1992. The spiritual leader held mass prayer services, visited districts of the republic, and consecrated the site for the construction of the Buddhist temple complex “Geden Sheddub Choykorling” (the Arshan Khurul). One of the key issues of the religious revival in the republic was the creation of the institution of the Buddhist Sangha. The Buddha himself said that he is where there is the Vinaya — the code of rules of monastic discipline. The Shajin Lama, Telo Tulku Rinpoche, at the beginning of his work identified the creation of a strong monastic community, pure in its observance of vows, as one of the main directions of his activity in the development of Buddhism.
