An Important and Necessary Dialogue
The other day the senior administrator of the Central Khurul of Kalmykia, Yonten-gelung, held a meeting with the staff of Correctional Colony No. 2 (Yashkul), and with the inmates serving their sentences.
They spoke about spirituality and morality; for the convicts Yonten-gelung gave a lecture on Buddhism and read prayers. The exchange took the form of a discussion. Everyone received exhaustive answers to all the questions that interested them.
It should be said that many years ago a Cooperation Agreement was signed between the khurul and the Federal Penitentiary Service Directorate for the Republic of Kalmykia, and such meetings with Buddhist clergy in correctional institutions have become traditional and are held on a regular basis. These meetings give the convicts spiritual support and, most importantly, help them on the path of correction.
