An Offering to the Deity of Fire. Today the Tantric Ritual “Jinseg” Was Held at the Central Khurul.
The monks, led by the Venerable Yeshe Lodoy Rinpoche, began today’s ritual with a prayer service, after which they went out onto the territory of the khurul complex, where everything had already been prepared for lighting the ritual fire.
In advance, the clergy prepared the offerings: black sesame seeds, rice, peas, hulled and unhulled barley, lentils, wheat, etc. — each ingredient has a special meaning. For example, the offering of melted butter is made to prolong life, the offering of branches removes obstacles, peas increase strength, and wheat helps to overcome illness.
It should be said that there are several types of “jinsegs” — increasing, peaceful, wrathful, subjugating. Today the pacifying one was held, which is usually performed for the benefit of all living beings, the removal of obstacles and defilements. It is believed that deities, protectors of the Dharma, and masters of the locality descend upon the place where the Fire Puja is held. They gather to hear the requests of the people, to accept their gifts and, of course, to help.
An important aspect of this particular rite is prayer for the better rebirths of the deceased as well. Therefore the faithful brought butter for offerings, as well as slips of paper with the names of departed relatives, which were burned in the ritual fire.
Today’s tantric ritual was attended by a huge number of the faithful. It was gratifying to see many young people, who will surely know their traditions and pass them on to future generations.
The series of annual rituals will continue with the “Torgyak” ritual, which will be held on October 4 in two sessions: from 9:00 to 11:30, and from 13:00 to 15:00.
