Are There Books of Prayers in the Kalmyk Language Available?
One of the most pressing questions that come into the private messages of our group is: “Are there books of prayers in the Kalmyk language available?”
As the senior administrator of the Central Khurul, Yonten-Gelung, noted, over recent years he and Gennady Korneev have been working on several series of books and prayer books in the native language: “We are confident that this work is important for the revival and development of both the Buddhist teaching and the Kalmyk language as a whole.”
For example, “Өдр болһна буйн-кишгин зальврл” is a small collection of prayers in the native language for daily practices. It includes not only the mantras of the main deities to whom people most often turn, but also other prayers, such as the prayer before eating, the prayer for lighting the zul, prayers against bad dreams, and so on.
A very interesting work is “Хураңһу ивәл, зальврл тергүтн оршв” by the Buddhist monk Sandzhi-Rakba Menkov. This is a work by a Kalmyk Gelung in which the Buddhist refuge is explained, and some prayers in the Kalmyk language are also given. As the Gelung Sandzhi-Rakba himself said, this book was written so that the Kalmyks would not forget their language and the Teaching.
The faithful often ask for “Малын банзргч оршв” — a collection of prayers for the protection against diseases of livestock, which also includes images of amulets for them.
There are other collections as well.
Work in this direction will certainly continue, and it is important for the faithful to understand the meaning of the texts they read.
Dear countrymen, these books in the Kalmyk language can be purchased at the shop of the Central Khurul.
