Believers of Kalmykia Welcomed Tsagan Sar Early in the Morning at the Khurul
🙏 Directing thoughts, words, and deeds for the benefit of all living beings. 🙏
The believers of Kalmykia welcomed the national holiday of Tsagan Sar early in the morning at “The Golden Abode of Buddha Shakyamuni.” Each of them came consciously, with the intention of taking the one-day Mahayana vows for the next 24 hours. They were bestowed by the Venerable Geshe Lharampa Jagba Gyatso. As the Teacher explained, for those who are taking these vows for the first time, it is important to do so in the temple, under the guidance of a monk, while those who have already taken them may do so on their own. It is enough to sincerely state the intention:
“I take the eight Mahayana vows for one day for the benefit of all living beings.”
Each of these vows helps to purify the mind and heart:
1️⃣ Do not harm living beings. Renounce violence in any form — even thoughts of it. Show compassion toward all living things.
2️⃣ Do not take what is not given. Do not appropriate what belongs to others — neither openly nor indirectly. Practice generosity and gratitude.
3️⃣ Abstain from sexual misconduct.
4️⃣ Speak the truth. Avoid lies, deception, and idle words. Speak consciously and with kindness.
5️⃣ Abstain from intoxicating substances. Alcohol, drugs, tobacco — everything that clouds the mind is set aside. Clarity of mind is the goal.
6️⃣ Fast after noon. The last intake of “heavy” food takes place before noon. After that — only water, light tea, or diluted beverages. This teaches self-discipline and lightness.
7️⃣ Simplicity in everyday life. Renounce luxurious seats and high beds. Modesty reminds us: happiness is not found in comfort.
8️⃣ Abstain from adornments and entertainment. No cosmetics, perfumes, jewelry, music, or dancing. In this way we learn to value inner beauty and silence.
