Believers of Kalmykia Welcomed Urs Sar
Buddhists all over the world observe the beginning of the sacred month of Urs Sar today with special reverence. Believers gathered at the Central Khurul of Kalmykia from early in the morning. By tradition, this day began with taking vows. They were bestowed upon all who wished by the Shajin Lama of Kalmykia, Geshe Tenzin Choydak. He spoke in great detail about the significance of Urs Sar, and about how important it is during this month to perform virtues and to treat all living beings with respect. “If we sincerely show such respect, then we naturally avoid committing the ten non-virtuous deeds — they simply find no place in a heart full of kindness,” the Shajin Lama noted.
Having performed prostrations, the believers refrained from eating meat, from alcohol, and from smoking; each person determined the duration of abstinence for themselves. Afterwards, everyone took part in a great festive prayer service dedicated to the sacred month of Urs Sar. Together with the monks, everyone present in the hall offered up prayers, asking the Burkhans for prosperity, happiness, and harmony.
