The festive prayer service Ik Yöräl is underway at the Central Khurul

At the Central Khurul of Kalmykia “Burkhn Bagshin Altn süm”, festive prayer services Ik Yöräl are being held, dedicated to the fifteen miraculous deeds performed by Buddha Shakyamuni.

The festival was established in 1409 by Lama Tsongkhapa and took place in the central temple of Lhasa — the Jokhang, as well as in the monasteries of Ganden, Drepung, and Sera. Later, under the 4th Panchen Lama Chökyi Gyaltsen, on the 12th–14th days philosophical debates and examination defenses for the highest academic degree of “Geshe Lharampa” began to be held in Barkor Square in front of the Jokhang temple.

During the Soviet era, the tradition of holding Ik Yöräl was interrupted; however, thanks to the efforts of the Shajin Lama of Kalmykia Telo Tulku Rinpoche and the monastic community, this tradition was restored.

It is believed that all deeds performed during this period are multiplied many times over. Therefore, the monks advise reciting a large number of mantras, performing virtuous deeds, and bringing benefit to all living beings.

Tomorrow, February 27, the celebration of the “Day of the Manifestation of the Miraculous Powers of Buddha Shakyamuni” will be held at the Central Khurul, and at 16:00 the Head of the Buddhists of Kalmykia Telo Tulku Rinpoche will bestow a Teaching online.
