The First Day of the Great Prayer Assembly

A special atmosphere reigned at the Central Khurul today as the first day of the “Ik Yöräl” prayer assembly took place. This ancient tradition dates back to 1409. It was established by Lama Je Tsongkhapa in honor of the miraculous deeds of Buddha Shakyamuni, which he displayed in the first 15 days after the onset of Tsagan Sar.

Before the prayer service began, the Shajin Lama of Kalmykia, Geshe Tenzin Choydak, drew the believers’ attention to the special significance of the three days ahead. He urged them to use this time to strengthen their spiritual connection with the tradition: “Come to the khurul if you can, and while offering prayers to the Burkhans, think not only of yourselves, but of everyone — of people, animals, of all living beings. Do good, observe morality, teach your children — and this will surely be to your benefit.”

From early morning the Dugan was crowded: the sounds of prayers, the aroma of incense, the light of the lamps and, above all, the unity of the hearts of those who came with pure intentions. A special grace could be felt here; for several hours the monks offered their prayers to all the Buddhas and bodhisattvas, to the Protectors of the Dharma and, of course, particular praises were dedicated to the Great Teacher — Buddha Shakyamuni. Believers of various ages came to the temple today, and each found here something of their own: peace, hope, inspiration.

The first day of “Ik Yöräl” is behind us; tomorrow the prayer service will continue. It will also be held in 2 sessions: from 9.00 to 11.30 and from 13.00 to 15.00.
