Kalmykia to Celebrate the Birthday of Buddha Shakyamuni

The 15th lunar day of the sacred month of Urs Sar is approaching. This is an important day for all Buddhists. It was on this very day that the Great Buddha performed three principal great deeds: he was born, attained Enlightenment, and passed into Mahaparinirvana. This year it falls on June 11.

As in previous years, festive events will be held in the main Buddhist temple of Kalmykia.

✅ From early morning, at 5:00 a.m., everyone will be able to take the one-day Mahayana vows. They will be bestowed upon laypeople by the Venerable Geshe Lobsang Changchub.

✅ At 9:00 a.m., a solemn prayer service will begin in the prayer hall of “The Golden Abode of Buddha Shakyamuni.” In honor of the sacred holiday, the monks of the Central Khurul will offer their prayers to the Great Teacher.

✅ At 3:00 p.m. on this day, a lecture on the fundamentals of Buddhism will be given at the khurul by the Shajin Lama of Kalmykia, Geshe Tenzin Choydak.

✅ At 5:00 p.m., following the established tradition, the monks will perform the ritual of washing and consecrating the large thangka of Buddha Shakyamuni, which is hung on this day on the facade of the khurul (on the northern side).

✅ We remind you that on this day everyone who comes to the temple will be able to behold and pay homage to the sacred relics: the Sharira of Buddha Shakyamuni and a sprout of the Bodhi tree. The exhibition will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
