Live broadcast. Barry Kerzin. Going deep: what is consciousness?
The “Save Tibet” Foundation invites you to take part in the second session with the Venerable Barry Kerzin — a Doctor of Medicine (USA), personal physician of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and a Buddhist monk — as part of the study program “Shamatha — the Foundation of Spiritual Practice.” The second session with the Venerable Barry Kerzin will be devoted to the theme “What is consciousness?” and will take place on March 17 at 19:00 (Moscow time). Barry Kerzin’s program is part of the intensive course “MEDITATION,” organized by the foundation for an in-depth acquaintance with the meditation techniques offered by various spiritual traditions. The sessions will be held once a week on Wednesdays at 19:00 (Moscow time) on the ZOOM platform. The duration of each session is 75 minutes (with simultaneous translation). The session includes a lecture, meditation with the teacher, and answers to questions. Registration is required to participate in the second session. After registering, you will receive a link to connect to the conference. (We ask you not to post the link publicly. This will help prevent malicious intrusions during the broadcast.) Schedule of sessions: March 17 — What is consciousness? March 24 — What is shamatha and its nine stages? March 31 — Mental objects of shamatha. April 7 — Shamatha focused on shunyata (emptiness). April 14 — The application of shamatha in the generation and completion stages in highest yoga tantra and in dzogchen and mahamudra. Barry Kerzin has lived for more than twenty years in Dharamsala (India), providing professional medical care not only to high lamas but also to the poorer segments of the population. Combining many years of Buddhist meditation practice with the knowledge of a Western scholar, Barry Kerzin has devoted many years to studying the influence of contemplative practices on a person’s psycho-physical health, investigating the structural and functional differences between the brain of a long-term meditation practitioner and the brain of an ordinary person. Barry Kerzin is one of the few physicians familiar with the state of post-mortem meditation, “tukdam,” and engaged in the scientific study of this phenomenon. After the heartbeat ceases and breathing stops, an experienced spiritual practitioner is able to remain in meditation on the clear light, keeping the body from decay and preserving inner warmth. Barry Kerzin has three times had the honor of caring for great contemplatives who had entered the post-mortem meditative state. By the blessing of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Barry Kerzin teaches Buddhist philosophy, teaches the fundamentals of meditation, and conducts silent retreats in the countries of North America and Europe, as well as in Japan and Mongolia.
