Photo exhibition “The Development of Buddhism in Kalmykia” opened at the Central Khurul

At the Central Khurul of Kalmykia “The Golden Abode of Buddha Shakyamuni,” the opening of a photo exhibition dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Geden Sheddub Choy Korling Monastery took place.

The exhibition presents the works of Nikolai Boshev, Saglara Nastinova, Konstantin Mamyshev, and other photographers of Kalmykia. Their works depict such important moments of the quarter-century period of the khurul’s existence as visits of teachers, and the holding of teachings and retreats.

Opening the exhibition, the Shajin Lama of Kalmykia Telo Tulku Rinpoche noted that this is the first large khurul built in the Republic of Kalmykia in the post-Soviet period. “I remember how we began building ‘Syakyusn syume’ in 1993. We completed the construction in 1996. This year marks 25 years — time has flown by very quickly. When we were selecting photographs for this exhibition, we ran into the problem of a shortage of material: unfortunately, not all stages of the construction were captured on photo and film, but we tried to prepare the most interesting materials,” the Shajin Lama addressed those gathered.

“Taking this opportunity, I want to thank the monastic community of the republic for its labor for the good of Kalmykia and its people, as well as all the laypeople who have supported the khurul throughout all these years,” added the Head of the region’s Buddhists.

The exhibition will run until the end of May; everyone interested will be able to view the displays on the 3rd floor of “The Golden Abode of Buddha Shakyamuni.”
