Quotes of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama

“A compassionate attitude, accompanied by sincere concern for the well-being of other living beings, is born through logical reflection, through a systematically constructed thought process. Alongside intense compassion, other strong emotions may also be present within us, but even when they arise, they are hardly able to disturb the peace of the mind. This happens because now these emotions too rest upon logical reflection - the intellect plays an enormous role in the way they manifest. In everyday life we tend to respond to various situations and experiences with violent emotional outbursts. I call such reactions to trivial life events afflictive, because they only bring confusion to our feelings and throw our mind off balance. But if the stream of our consciousness is saturated with compassionate thoughts and kindheartedness, then we cease to react violently to unfavorable circumstances that usually lead to an outburst of emotions. A stability appears within us, a sense of resting upon deep roots.” The 14th Dalai Lama
