The II International Buddhist Forum is being held in Buryatia

“Traditional Buddhism and the Challenges of Modernity.” For the second day now, Buryatia has been comprehensively discussing key issues in the development of Buddhism, Buddhist culture, philosophy and practice. As a reminder, the International Buddhist Forum is taking place there.

The Shajin Lama of Kalmykia, Geshe Tenzin Choydak, is taking part in the events. Just a few hours ago the ceremonial opening of the Forum concluded. Also today, within the framework of discussion panels, various topics were discussed, touching on Buddhist education, the Buddhist concept of consciousness, and traditional Eastern medicine; questions of Buddhism and ecology were raised, and so on. “The day before there was also a rich program. Yesterday I took part in the international scientific conference ‘Buddhism in a Changing World.’ Several sections worked simultaneously, devoted to Buddhological studies in Russia and the world, the history and philosophy of Buddhism, Buddhist culture and education, as well as the interaction of science and Buddhism,” the Shajin Lama of Kalmykia told us in a brief telephone conversation. By the way, a delegation from our republic, headed by the region’s leader Batu Khasikov, is taking part in the forum.

The forum’s work will continue tomorrow.

Its main uniqueness lies in the fact that not only public and religious figures but also representatives of science from different countries have gathered on one platform, conducting an important and necessary dialogue on the development of Buddhism
