The 1st International Buddhist Forum Is Taking Place in Buryatia

Today in Ulan-Ude the 1st International Buddhist Forum “Traditional Buddhism and the Challenges of Modernity” began its work.

The Kalmyk clergy were represented by Shajin Lama of Kalmykia Geshe Tenzin Choydak, kensur Andzha-gelung, and the head of the administration of the Central Khurul, Yonten-gelung. A large delegation from the Republic of Kalmykia, headed by Batu Sergeyevich Khasikov, also arrived at the forum.

The first day of the forum turned out to be very eventful; 8 discussion venues operated simultaneously, where issues of Buddhist education, the position of Buddhism in modern society and the information space, international cooperation of states where this teaching is widespread were discussed, and issues of Eastern medicine and the problems of preserving cultural and historical heritage were also examined. Incidentally, one of the venues, “Buddhism in Modern International Relations,” was moderated by the head of the administration of the Central Khurul of Kalmykia, Yonten-gelung.

“Today at each panel session a great many reports were heard, dedicated to various aspects of the preservation and development of Buddhism in the world. I personally took great interest in the discussion of the possibility of creating a concept of Buddhist international law. I see great significance in this issue. At our venue, questions of joint international projects were actively raised, for example, between Russia and Nepal. Reports by scholars from various countries were heard, including our Kalmyk ones. On the whole, I believe that the forum has gotten off to a good start and will be conducted in accordance with all its stated goals,” Yonten-gelung reported in a telephone conversation.

Tomorrow the forum participants will visit the Ivolginsky Datsan. There a conference dedicated to the “Phenomenon of Pandito Khambo Lama Dashi Dorzho Itigelov” will be held.
