The Day of Buddha Shakyamuni’s Display of Miraculous Powers

Today is one of the most important Buddhist holidays — the Day of Buddha Shakyamuni’s Display of Miraculous Powers. As the sutras say, more than 2500 years ago in the Indian city of Shravasti, on the first day of the month of the Dragon, the Buddha entered into a debate with six teachers who preached erroneous doctrine. Over the course of 15 days he displayed miracles, and the Teaching he bestowed in those days became the cause for many beings to set out on the path of the Dharma…

During the prayer service all the Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and Protectors of the Dharma are invoked and, of course, praises to Buddha Shakyamuni are recited. Texts praising his miraculous deeds are read, along with the biography of the great Lama Tsongkhapa, the text of the Prajnaparamita, and other prayers addressed to the great Teachers.

As the monks of the Central Khurul note, it is very important for every believer to carry out all the necessary practices during these first days of the White Month with pure thoughts and pure motivation: to recite a large number of mantras, to pay special attention to observing morality, to reflect on one’s karma, to perform virtuous deeds and to bring benefit to all living beings. It is believed that during this period their effect is multiplied many times over.
