Today one of the senior monks, ngagrampa Thubten Shakya, passed away

Dear brothers and sisters! It is with sorrow that we report that today, May 23, 2021, in his 68th year of life, after a prolonged illness from the consequences of the coronavirus infection, the Venerable Thubten Shakya passed away. Gen Thubten Shakya was born in 1953 in Tibet. In India he entered the tantric monastery of Gyudmed, which he successfully graduated from in 1990, receiving the degree of “Ngagrampa” — an expert in tantra. The Geshe-la first visited Kalmykia in 2004, when, together with a delegation from the Gyudmed monastery, he took part in the construction of a mandala in the city of Elista. In the same year he led the construction and installation of a large prayer wheel — a kürde — in the cultural complex “Pagoda of Seven Days.” In 2007, at the invitation of Shajin Lama of Kalmykia Telo Tulku Rinpoche and the monastic community of Kalmykia, Gen Thubten Shakya came to the republic on a permanent basis to provide assistance in maintaining the Teaching of the Buddha and restoring tantric rituals and other Buddhist traditions. Over the course of many years, the Geshe-la took an active part in spreading the Teaching of the Buddha in Russia. A large number of stupas and khuruls were built with his direct participation. His contribution to the development of Buddhism is invaluable; he left behind many students in Kalmykia, Tuva, and other cities of Russia. May he attain a fortunate rebirth! Om Mani Padme Hum!
