Today the sacred month of Urs Sar begins for Buddhists
Traditionally, from this day believers observe the Buddhist fast, abstaining from eating animal-based products: meat, fish, eggs. Also, during the period of Urs Sar, no alcoholic beverages are consumed. If it is not possible to keep the fast for the entire month, then abstaining from the above-mentioned products for 15 days is permitted. Within the sacred month, several events will take place. On May 16, near the “Lonely Poplar” complex, the monks of the Central Khurul will perform the traditional rite of “Hal täklhn” (offering to the fire), and on May 26, at “The Golden Abode of Buddha Shakyamuni,” a festive prayer service will be held in honor of the three great deeds of Buddha Shakyamuni. According to astrological tradition, on this day the Buddha performed three great deeds: he was born, attained Enlightenment, and passed into parinirvana. These deeds took place at the hour of the hare on the 15th lunar day of the 4th month, which in 2021 corresponds to May 26, and are considered the most important events. The monks advise performing as many virtuous deeds as possible during this month and giving up non-virtuous deeds. During this month it is good to make circumambulations around stupas, khuruls and other sacred places, to recite as many mantras as possible, and to make prostrations before sacred objects. Urs Sar is called the “month of the hundred-thousandfold increase,” because the result of virtuous and non-virtuous deeds in this month is multiplied a hundred thousand times.
