Wisdom in Action: What Was Discussed at the Lecture by Shajin Lama Geshe Tenzin Choydak
A special gathering took place within the walls of the Central Khurul — a lecture by the Shajin Lama of Kalmykia, Geshe Tenzin Choydak, devoted to the foundations of Buddhism. Two hours of deep conversation, sincere questions, and wise answers gave those who gathered that day in the main Buddhist temple of Kalmykia food for thought and practical guidelines on the path of spiritual development.
The Shajin Lama began with an important clarification: what is genuine Buddhist practice? He emphasized that it is not merely the reading of sacred texts, nor only faith in the Three Jewels. Practice is how we live, how we apply the Buddha's instructions in everyday life.
They also spoke in depth about karma. The Geshe reminded everyone of the law of karma: every action of ours has consequences. Virtuous deeds create causes for happiness, non-virtuous ones — causes for suffering. By practicing the Dharma, we learn to perform only those actions that lead to a wholesome result.
The Shajin Lama also recalled the ten non-virtues — actions that lead to suffering. It was interesting to see the connection between Buddhist principles and Kalmyk culture. Respect for elders, hospitality, a reverent attitude toward everyone — these traditional values help us to naturally avoid non-virtuous deeds and transform our minds: “When we show respect to others, it is easier for us to follow spiritual instructions.”
One of the most lively parts of the lecture was devoted to raising children. The Shajin Lama emphasized that parents fill their children's lives with the concepts of “right” and “wrong,” and the future of the children, and of society as a whole, depends on the values we instill in them today. Geshe Tenzin Choydak shared personal stories from his childhood, showing by example how moral upbringing shapes the personality.
In closing the meeting, the Shajin Lama once again urged everyone to value their life and time — priceless gifts that must be used mindfully, so that each day brings us closer to enlightenment and happiness🙏
