The Lamp-Light Offering Prayer Composed by the Glorious Jowo Atisha

May the vessel of this lamp be equal to the circumference of the “three-thousandfold great thousand worlds”!

May the wick of this lamp become the size of the king of mountains — Sumeru!

And may the clarified butter become as vast as the boundless ocean!

And in number, may a hundred million of them arise before each of the buddhas!

Dispelling with their light the darkness of ignorance [of living beings]

From the peak of samsara down to the Avichi hell (“Without Reprieve”),

May [these lamps] illuminate [space] and may [living beings] clearly behold

The pure realms of all the buddhas and bodhisattvas of the ten directions!

OM VAJRA ALOKE A HUM.

E MA HO!

I offer this wondrous, supreme, radiant lamp

To the thousand buddhas of the fortunate kalpa and the other [buddhas],

To the gurus, yidams, dakinis, protectors of the Dharma, and the assemblies of the mandala deities

In all the infinite worlds of the ten directions.

May all living beings, led by my father and mother,

In this life and in all the places wherever [they] may be born,

Beholding directly the Pure Lands of the perfect buddhas,

Become inseparable from the Protector Amitabha!

By the power of the truth of the Three Jewels and the assembly of the deities of the three roots, I pray,

Bless this wish that it may swiftly be fulfilled!

TADYATHA OM PANCHENDRIYA AVABODHANAYE SVAHA (7 times)

[Visualization]:

The [light] of the lamp transforms into a single great light of the five kinds of wisdom.

From the syllables OM and DHI upon a lotus and moon disc

Arise one hundred and eight beautiful goddesses of light-offering in silken garments and precious ornaments.

Each of them holds a lamp in her hands.

From them appear countless myriads of goddesses of light-offering like unto them.

They all ceaselessly make offerings of light to all the peaceful and wrathful deities

Of all the buddha realms to the very edge of space.

[Dedication of merit]:

By the power of the merit from the offering of light performed in this way

May all living beings of the six realms, led by the deceased and the benefactors,

Restore all their broken vows!

May all their obscurations to knowledge be purified!

May all their negative karma and the defilements of misdeeds be purified!

May the three realms of samsara be emptied!

Grant the supreme empowerments and realizations!
